Advent is a special season for the Church — it is the time when the world prepares to celebrate anew the coming of Christ. Often, we lose sight of the point of this season because we get caught up in our preparations for Christmas and arrive at Christmas no more transformed than we were at the start of Advent.
A way that our parish is seeking to prepare for Jesus’ birth and experience true transformation in this powerful season is by engaging with a new program called Rejoice! Advent Meditations with the Holy Family. This year, we will walk with Mary and Joseph as they prepare to welcome their son, the Savior of the World.
As we enter the Advent Season together, let us be ever more mindful of the mystery that is unfolding for us. It is the mystery of the angel Gabriel appearing to the Blessed Virgin Mary who is frightened, greatly troubled, by the intrusion saying: “Do not be afraid, Mary. For you have found favor with God….and will bear a son … and call his name Jesus.” And Mary would then find peaceful consolation in the angel’s presence and God’s plan for her life.
We can easily be fearful, frightened, with unfamiliar intrusions. Even in these days of social unrest and the pandemic, as well as uncertainties, we can become afraid and unsettled. Yet, we too find peace and consolation in God’s presence, His grace, His kindness and His unfolding plan for our lives.
