Dear Parishioners and Friends in Christ,

In Matthew’s gospel (14:22-33) this Sunday, Jesus comes walking on the sea during the fourth watch of the night, which is to say the darkest time of the night. This is meant to be an affirmation of Jesus’ divinity, His power over nature.

Naturally, His disciples are terrified when they see Him. Jesus says to them: “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.” So, Peter looks to Jesus and says “command me to come to you on the water.” That is, share your divine power with me. So looking at Jesus, Peter got out of the boat and actually began to walk on the water toward Jesus.

Peter apparently wasn’t afraid to leave the boat. It’s only when the winds began to blow that he panicked and he became frightened; and, beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!”  And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught Peter.

This is our cry when things are overwhelming and uncertain: “Lord, save me!” Most of our fears are grounded in the unfamiliar, the unknown. For us too, when the storms of life confront us, we become frightened. We become unsure of God’s grace, power and presence. We take our eyes off of Jesus and begin to sink.

Jesus is always nearby with outstretched hands to pull us up from our fears, doubts and troubles. Let us keep our eyes fixed on Jesus and then share in the mystery of His divine power in our lives.

In the Lord of Hope,

Father Jerome T Karcher

Effective immediately: due to the recent restrictions mandated by the State of California all Masses are now celebrated outside in the church courtyard.

We ask that you please continue to be mindful of the following:

  • The California Department of Public Health now requires the wearing of face masks to slow the spread of the COVID-19. As such, the Diocese of Orange for the common good of all people, will continue to require face masks to be worn while attending Mass in the courtyard. Please put your mask on when you exit your car.

Now that we are celebrating Mass in the courtyard, the courtyard is now our “church”. Please keep the following in mind:

  • Maintain a spirit of reverence and quiet as you enter the courtyard until you leave.
